Ok, my laptop for the past several weeks has been just completely shutting off at random times. I then obviously have to reboot everything and it's a hassle. For instance, just played online poker and shut down right in the middle of a hand.

Any reason why it would do this, what should i do?

Thanks in advance.

Whatever it is, and most likely it is some processor problem, this laptop needs repair/replacement.

Probably overheating. It's a pretty common issue with laptops. I'd take it in to make sure that your fan is working okay.

Do you think that this could be a result of me leaving the computer on for weeks at a time like an idiot?

that sucks..the one I have now did that crap for a while..until I got a virus and had to reinstall my operating system. That did the trick.

I believe it is related to your processor, as Data said, or a driver. And it is a problem that won't go away by itself. sorry dude

Maybe, but in theory-that shouldn't cause it. You should definitely rule out any viruses, but when I hear laptop & shutting down.....it's usually heat related.

I guess I should go get it checked out then rather to continue to have it shut down at random times.

Hopefully it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to fix...

ALSO, when I start my computer, I have 2 messages that pop up that I must hit "cancel" twice, then they go away...I think they stem from when I downloaded Limewire a few years ago but got rid of it....

A processor that overheats will shut down your computer. Another problem that happens when your computer shuts down is when you have a bad power supply.

I hate to mention this but are you leaving your laptop unplugged? If so, it could be your battery losing power after not being charged up.

Getting it looked at by taking it to a qualified repair center is well worth the aggravation of having it turn off at inopportune times.

This worked for me. Seemed to simple - but you know what they say.

Using compressed air (the kind in a can) - I blew air into the grids where the fan is at the back of one of my older laptops. I was stunned at the amount of dust that came out (almost like a ball of lint)

The laptop is back to running 12-16 hours straight without a reboot. For the price of a can of air - it's worth a shot.
